May 2021 - Medicaid Expansion for Moms In the Senate

HB133, which would extend Medicaid health insurance for new mothers from 60 days to one year after pregnancy, is finally being heard in the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services on May 19th. This is HUGE considering that this same legislation died waiting for a hearing in the Senate last session. We need all hands on deck to support this life-saving legislation and we have an opportunity to show up (in-person) for Texas moms!

April 2021 - Medicaid Expansion for Moms Must Pass

Medicaid extension has been the top recommendation from the Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee for years as it will make a life saving difference for the 52% of Texas moms covered by the program. If passed, this is a key step to combatting maternal mortality, preventing pregnancy complications, and ensuring Texas kids and families thrive.

How You Can Help:

Representative Toni Rose’s HB 133, which would extend Medicaid health insurance for new mothers from 60 days to one year after pregnancy, is waiting to be voted out of Committee. JANUARY 2021 - Allow Texans to Testify Remotely

The Texas legislature is considering requiring any and all testimony this session to be IN PERSON. We stand firmly against this as we believe that people must be able to engage safely with their elected officials to express their views on public policy.

How You Can Help:

The League of Women Voters created this fast and easy tool that (with a couple clicks) contacts your elected legislators to let them know you want the Texas legislature to allow REMOTE TESTIMONY and to consider the voices and health of all Texans.

December 2020 - Spread the Word about the MMMRC’s Latest Report

The Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee (MMMRC) has released their long-awaited update about Maternal Health in Texas. The report details the overall statistics of maternal mortality and morbidity, information on how pilot programs from the 86th Session have faired as well as their recommendations for ways the Legislature can take immediate action to lower the high percentage of maternal deaths and near deaths in our state.

How You Can Help:

Read the report (we found this rundown from Texans Care for Children to be extremely helpful) and then reach out to your State Representatives to make sure they’re paying attention to what the Review Committee has recommended. In a year where public contact with Legislators is going to be mostly virtual, consistent messaging about the importance of maternal health will be key. TCFC has simplified this process and created an Action Center where you can quickly email your Texas House Rep, State Senator, Governor and Lt. Governor with just a few clicks.
