How to Drop a Card

Registering Support is a quick and easy way to make an impact

Believe it or not, legislators do want to hear from you! Registering support or dropping a card is done during the committee hearing stage of a bill in both the House and the Senate. The process is the same for both chambers but the House has a great step by step video to show you how to complete the registration process. You can register on the kiosks provided in the extension (the House kiosks are on the West side of the extension while the Senate ones are on the East side) or you can access registration on your iPad when you are logged in to the Capitol Wifi. This only works on a tablet or laptop - cell phones are not able to use the registration system (trust us, we tried).

Tips & Tricks

  • Positions must be registered BEFORE a hearing ends. The bills are usually called in order of seniority of the author or sponsor which is not how they’re listed on the agenda. To avoid missing your window, we recommend dropping your card as close to when the hearing starts as possible.

  • Save your login profile on the kiosks so you can quickly register. If there are multiple bills/hearings on the same day, you can complete all of them in one registration to save time.

  • Skip the elevators. If you’re up for some stairs, the easiest way in and out of the extension are via stairs - elevator lines are long and can get crazy with all the visitors. Also, the South entrance to the Capitol (the side that faces Town Lake) is the busiest. Take the West or North entrance for a minimal wait times.
